London (Zahid Anwar Mirza) – The United Kingdom has tightened diplomatic measures against Iran following an incident near RAF Fairford airbase last month. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband summoned the Iranian ambassador and made it clear that the UK would not tolerate threats on its soil.
According to Miliband, alleged attempts by Iran to undermine Britain’s national security are unacceptable. The UK Foreign Office has imposed sanctions on two Iranian nationals, including asset freezes and travel restrictions.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham told Parliament that the incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire was almost certainly carried out at the direction of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He also indicated that further sanctions against Iran could be considered.
Meanwhile, Iran has denied any involvement in the incident. The developments have added to tensions between London and Tehran, with the British government signalling that it will continue to address what it considers threats to the country’s security.
