Brussels, (Unib Rashid) — In an increasingly fragmented global order, the European Union has reiterated its firm support for the United Nations. This commitment was expressed by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, during her address at the ongoing UN Security Council session in New York on EU–UN cooperation.
She highlighted that the erosion of international law is evident in two major global crises today — Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Kallas noted that a new world order is emerging, characterized by competition and coercive power politics, where a handful of military powers seek to establish spheres of influence.

She emphasized that this shifting landscape makes the EU’s support for the United Nations more crucial than ever. Addressing members of the Security Council, she pointed out that despite representing only 5% of the world’s population, the European Union and its member states contribute 42% of global official development assistance to the UN.
Additionally, EU member states finance approximately one-quarter of the UN’s regular budget, ensuring that their contributions are paid in full and on time. Without naming any specific country, Kallas remarked that the EU does not base its support for the United Nations solely on how much it spends, underscoring its principled commitment to multilateralism.
