Afzal Khan MP Writes to Foreign Secretary Over Interception of British Gaza Aid Boat, Calls for Immediate Action
London, (Unib Rashid) __ British Member of Parliament Afzal Khan has written a formal letter to Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressing deep concern over the interception of the British-flagged civilian aid vessel Madleen by Israeli forces in international waters. The boat was carrying humanitarian aid intended for Gaza, which remains under a prolonged Israeli blockade.
In his letter dated 9th June 2025, Afzal Khan urged the UK government to urgently seek clarification from Israel as to why the boat was intercepted, to ensure the safe return of all volunteers, and to guarantee that the aid reaches its destination in Gaza.
Highlighting the worsening humanitarian crisis, Khan referenced United Nations reports stating that over two million Palestinians face the risk of starvation due to severe restrictions on humanitarian access. He noted that aid distribution centres in Gaza had recently been shut for a week, exacerbating the already dire conditions.
“I urge you to take immediate action,” Khan wrote, “to ensure all volunteers return safely and freely, and to guarantee that the aid enters Gaza.”
The Manchester Rusholme MP also called on the government to push for an immediate ceasefire, the full restoration of humanitarian aid to Gaza, the release of remaining hostages, and a complete arms embargo on Israel to deter further violations of international law.
Afzal Khan concluded by stressing that the ongoing violence is rooted in the global failure to resolve the issue of Palestinian statehood. He stated that recognising the state of Palestine is a vital step in achieving a long-term, two-state solution and sustainable peace in the region.
