Chairman OPGF Akhtar Zaheer Urges Pakistan’s Top Leadership to Abolish Police Report Condition for Passports to Protect 30,000 Pakistanis in Spain.

Madrid, (Special Correspondent) __ Chairman of the Overseas Pakistanis Global Foundation, Akhtar Zaheer Ahmed, has urged Pakistan’s top leadership to immediately intervene and suspend the requirement of a police report from Spanish police stations for undocumented Pakistanis applying for new passports in Spain.

In open letters addressed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain, and Director General Immigration & Passports Mustafa Jamal Qazi, he highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian facilitation.

According to Ahmed, after 25 years, Spain has introduced a historic policy allowing undocumented residents to regularize their status. This policy presents a rare opportunity for approximately 30,000 undocumented Pakistanis residing in Spain to obtain legal status. Legalization would not only secure their employment but also enable their full integration into Spanish society.

However, a major hurdle remains: thousands of these Pakistanis currently do not possess valid Pakistani passports. Many had arrived in Spain through difficult and irregular routes and are now contributing significantly to Pakistan’s economy through remittances.

Under existing Pakistani regulations, applicants for new passports are required to report to local Spanish police stations before issuance. This condition has led to long queues outside police stations across Spain, overwhelming local authorities and creating serious delays. As a result, many Pakistanis risk missing the limited timeframe provided under Spain’s new regularization policy.

The Overseas Pakistanis Global Foundation leadership — including Vice Chairman Malik Suleman, Sheikh Shakeel, Chaudhry Zulfiqar, Farhan Meher, Ali Rashid Butt, Muhammad Suleman Gondal, Sohail Maqsood Waraich, and Legal Advisor Shiraz Khan — emphasized that the condition is proving counterproductive and could disproportionately harm Pakistani nationals.

The Foundation has appealed to the Government of Pakistan to temporarily suspend the police reporting requirement under exceptional circumstances. It argues that such a humanitarian step would enable thousands of Pakistanis to benefit from Spain’s legalization initiative, secure lawful residency, and continue serving Pakistan through enhanced economic contributions.

The Foundation stressed that immediate action is essential to protect the future of the Pakistani community in Spain and to ensure they are not deprived of this historic opportunity.
