Brussels/Islamabad, (Unib Rashid) Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism and underscored the central role of the United Nations in addressing global challenges during a meeting with Ms. Michelle Bachelet, a candidate for the position of the next United Nations Secretary-General.

The meeting took place at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad and was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch.

Welcoming Ms. Bachelet to Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of strengthening the multilateral system and ensuring that the United Nations remains at the forefront of efforts to promote international peace, sustainable development and human rights.

The Prime Minister stressed the need to uphold the purposes and principles enshrined in the UN Charter, ensure the faithful implementation of United Nations resolutions and international treaties, and achieve balanced progress across the organization’s three core pillars—peace and security, development, and human rights.

He also called for stronger international cooperation to accelerate the implementation of the global development agenda and effectively respond to emerging global challenges.

Ms. Michelle Bachelet commended Pakistan for its historic and significant contributions to the United Nations and acknowledged the country’s continued role in promoting regional and international peace and security.

The meeting reflected Pakistan’s continued engagement with the United Nations and its support for strengthening the international rules-based order through effective multilateral cooperation.
