Sadiq Khan Advocates for a Visionary Labour Budget with Emphasis on Green Investment

London, (Shahzad Ali) __ Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has called upon Chancellor Rachel Reeves to craft a “true Labour budget” this month that prioritises green investment and showcases a proactive approach to the nation’s pressing challenges.

As he prepares to co-chair the C40 World Mayors Summit in Rio de Janeiro alongside Mayor Eduardo Paes, Khan emphasises the importance of supporting Energy Secretary Ed Miliband’s ambitious plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035. He encourages the government to resist pressures from those who argue that net zero policies adversely affect the cost of living, asserting that such claims are misleading.

“These policies are not just about climate—they create jobs and enhance public health,” Khan stated. He has also said that while some initially opposed his Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expansion, they eventually came to understand its benefits in reducing air pollution and saving lives, leading to broader support.

Khan urges Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government to articulate a clear long-term vision for the future. “There is still work to be done to convince the public that we have viable solutions to their concerns,” he noted. He called for the Treasury to work closely with the Cabinet to integrate environmental priorities into the government’s agenda.

“This is more than a singular endeavour,” he emphasised. “The entire government must unite in this mission to position Britain as a global leader in environmental action.”

In closing, Khan reaffirmed that addressing the climate crisis can simultaneously foster economic growth and job creation, positioning environmental investment as a key element of a fair and progressive Labour government.
