World Sikh Parliament Protests Modi’s Netherlands Visit, Urges Dutch King to Raise Minority Rights Concerns.

Amsterdam/Netherlands, (Younas Khan) — Leaders of the World Sikh Parliament Europe have written a special letter to King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country, expressing serious concerns over alleged human rights violations and the treatment of Sikhs and other minorities in India. The organization urged the Dutch monarch to hold the Modi government accountable on these issues.

In a statement issued to the press, World Sikh Parliament European leaders Bhai Joga Singh, Bhai Manpreet Singh (UK), Bhai Gurcharan Singh Goraya, Bhai Gurpal Singh, Bhai Jatinder Singh (Germany), Bhai Satnam Singh, Bhai Shagara Singh (France), Bhai Jaswinder Singh, Harjot Singh Sandhu (Netherlands), and Bhai Pratpal Singh (Switzerland) said the letter was intended to inform the Dutch King about the alleged injustices faced by minorities, particularly the Sikh community, in India.

The letter stated that minority rights in India continue to be undermined in the name of democracy. Referring to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the leaders said that despite four decades having passed, the Sikh community has yet to receive complete justice and the wounds of the tragedy remain fresh.

The World Sikh Parliament also highlighted that several Sikh youths and “Bandi Singhs” remain imprisoned in India despite completing their sentences, calling it a violation of international human rights laws. Furthermore, the organization described the deaths of more than 750 farmers during the farmers’ protest movement against controversial agricultural laws as a “dark stain on democracy.”

The letter also expressed deep concern over what it described as India’s transnational repression targeting Sikh leaders abroad. In this regard, the statement referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s remarks in the Canadian Parliament alleging Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. It also mentioned the alleged plot targeting Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the United States and the arrest of Nikhil Gupta in connection with the case, saying these incidents reflected attempts to silence Sikh voices overseas.

The World Sikh Parliament leaders warned that Sikh activists living in Europe could also face similar threats and called on European governments to pay urgent attention to the issue.

The organization reiterated that the Sikh nation seeks the right to self-determination regarding its future. The leaders stated, “We have appealed to the Dutch government and the King to seriously raise these important issues during meetings with the Indian Prime Minister. The Sikh nation remains committed to protecting its sovereignty, independent identity, and human rights, and the international community must take notice of the ongoing injustices in India.”

Through this memorandum, the World Sikh Parliament said it aimed to effectively highlight the Sikh community’s human rights concerns, demand for justice, and political aspirations at the global level.
