Geneva/Switzerland (Unib Rashid) – A delegation of Kashmiri representatives staged a demonstration today at the Broken Chair monument outside the United Nations Office at Geneva, calling for an immediate end to human rights violations in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and urging the United Nations to enforce its longstanding resolutions on the region.
Speakers at the protest emphasized the Kashmiri people’s inalienable right to self-determination and urged the UN Security Council to act on its resolutions without further delay. They condemned what they described as the Indian government’s pursuit of a Hindu extremist agenda in Jammu and Kashmir, including land grabs, interference in religious affairs, and demographic engineering aimed at altering the region’s population composition.
The delegation also denounced the application of repressive laws such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), and Public Safety Act (PSA). They criticized the use of agencies including the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Enforcement Directorate to target civil society activists and political leaders.
Speakers characterized India’s “development” initiatives in the region as a settler-colonial project, arguing that heavy militarization and the militarization of pilgrimage routes are contributing to environmental degradation and climate-related risks in the ecologically fragile territory.
The protest concluded with renewed calls for international accountability and the realization of the Kashmiri people’s right to determine their own political future.
