EU Expresses Regret Over US Sanctions, Reaffirms Strong Support for International Criminal Court.

BRUSSELS, (Unib Rashid) – The European Union has expressed deep regret over the United States’ decision to impose sanctions on the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Judge Tomoko Akane, and a senior trial lawyer, Abdoulaye Seye, while reaffirming its unwavering support for the court.

In a statement issued by the European External Action Service, the European Union reiterated its strong and continued support for the ICC, describing the court as a fundamental pillar of the international criminal justice system and the global fight against impunity.

The EU said the ICC plays a key role in ensuring accountability for the most serious crimes of concern to the international community. It stressed that the court must be able to operate independently and impartially, without pressure, threats or interference.

According to the statement, sanctions targeting the court, its officials and staff undermine the ICC’s ability to carry out its mandate and weaken efforts to uphold international criminal justice.

The European Union reaffirmed that it stands firmly with the ICC and will continue to provide its full support to safeguard the court and its personnel against external pressure and threats.

The EU also reiterated its unwavering commitment to the Rome Statute and to protecting the independence, integrity and dignity of the International Criminal Court.

The statement comes amid growing international debate over measures targeting ICC officials and their potential impact on the court’s ability to pursue accountability for serious international crimes.
