Brussels, (Unib Rashid) – The Embassy of Pakistan in Brussels has published another feature under its “From the Archives” series, highlighting the distinguished diplomatic career of Ambassador Riffat Mehdi.
According to the Embassy, “The Embassy of Pakistan Brussels proudly pays tribute to Ambassador Riffat Mehdi, who served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union from 1992 to 1995. A distinguished diplomat, Ambassador Mehdi left a lasting legacy on Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement with Europe during a pivotal period in the evolution of European institutions and Pakistan-EU relations.”

Ambassador Mehdi’s tenure coincided with a significant phase in European history, marked by the implementation of the Maastricht Treaty in 1993. During this period, he played a vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s engagement with the European Union and advancing cooperation across a wide range of sectors.
He also contributed significantly to deepening Pakistan’s relations with Belgium, particularly in the areas of trade, economic cooperation, diplomacy, and cultural understanding.
In addition to his posting in Brussels, Ambassador Mehdi served Pakistan in several prestigious positions, including as High Commissioner to Canada and Zimbabwe, and Ambassador to Spain. He further contributed to international diplomacy through his work with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and later as a faculty member at the Milano School of International Affairs in New York.
The Embassy of Pakistan Brussels has paid tribute to Ambassador Mehdi’s valuable services and enduring contributions toward strengthening the bonds of friendship, cooperation, and mutual understanding between Pakistan and Belgium, as well as enhancing Pakistan-European Union relations.
