BRUSSELS/LONDON, (Unib Rashid) – Labour MP Afzal Khan has congratulated Andy Burnham on becoming the Leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister, describing his rise to the country’s top political office as the culmination of a journey he has proudly supported for more than a decade.

In a video message shared following the announcement, Khan reflected on Burnham’s political journey, saying he had backed his leadership ambitions since 2010 and expressed pride at seeing him lead both the Labour Party and the country.

“I’ve been seeing his whole journey, supporting his leadership bid since 2010. Seeing him now as the Leader of the Labour Party makes me proud,” Khan said.

He described Burnham’s inaugural speech as one that offered hope to the nation, saying it “warmed my heart” and represented “the start that we all needed.”

Khan added that he looks forward to working alongside the new Prime Minister as part of a Labour government committed to serving the British people.

In a separate congratulatory message, the Manchester Gorton MP praised Burnham’s commitment to tackling homelessness, noting that the issue featured prominently in his first speech as Prime Minister.

He welcomed the new Prime Minister’s focus on ending homelessness, describing it as an encouraging priority for the new administration.

Khan also pledged to work with Burnham’s government to address the rising cost of living and strengthen local communities across the United Kingdom.

“I can’t wait to work with him to bring down the cost of living for my constituents and put power back in the hands of every community across the country,” he said.

Afzal Khan’s remarks underline the strong support within Labour ranks for Burnham’s leadership and signal the party’s intention to prioritise issues including homelessness, economic relief for households, and greater empowerment of local communities under the new government.
