PM Shehbaz Bids Farewell to UN Resident Coordinator Mohamed Yahya.

Brussels/Islamabad, (Unib Rashid) – United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan Mohamed Yahya paid a farewell call on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday, with discussions focusing on Pakistan-UN cooperation and the country’s development and humanitarian priorities.

The Prime Minister thanked Mohamed Yahya for his valuable contribution to strengthening cooperation between Pakistan and the United Nations during his tenure. He also appreciated the continued support provided by the UN Country Team to Pakistan’s development and humanitarian priorities, particularly in the areas of climate resilience, sustainable development and disaster response.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recalled the United Nations’ important role in mobilizing international assistance for Pakistan, particularly during the devastating 2022 floods, and expressed appreciation for its continued support.

The Prime Minister congratulated Mohamed Yahya on his appointment as Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). He described the appointment as a fitting recognition of Yahya’s experience and commitment to humanitarian work.

The Prime Minister conveyed his best wishes for Yahya’s success in his new assignment and expressed confidence that the close and longstanding partnership between Pakistan and the United Nations would continue to grow.

Mohamed Yahya thanked the Prime Minister for his appreciation and expressed gratitude for the cooperation extended by the Government of Pakistan to him and the UN Country Team throughout his tenure. He reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development and humanitarian agenda.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi, and other senior government officials were also present during the meeting.
