BRUSSELS/ISLAMABAD, (Unib Rashid) – Pakistan and Canada reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in key economic sectors during a meeting between Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Canadian Foreign Minister H.E. Ms. Anita Anand at the Prime Minister House on Monday.

Ms. Anand is on an official visit to Pakistan.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain, Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr. Syed Tauqir Shah, and other senior government officials.

Welcoming the Canadian Foreign Minister, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan and Canada enjoy long-standing friendly relations and emphasized the need to further deepen cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, agri-foods, vaccine manufacturing, renewable energy, and the automobile and auto parts industries.

The Prime Minister conveyed his best wishes to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and expressed his desire to meet him in the near future. Recalling their telephone conversation in April, he thanked Canada for supporting Pakistan’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability.

Foreign Minister Anita Anand thanked the Prime Minister for the warm hospitality extended to her and her delegation in Islamabad. She conveyed the goodwill message of Prime Minister Mark Carney and said her visit reflected Canada’s commitment to broadening and strengthening its partnership with Pakistan.

Highlighting the importance of economic engagement, Ms. Anand said the Canadian government was keen to explore new opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, mining, energy, and the automobile and auto parts sectors.

She also underscored the significance of the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA), describing it as an important mechanism for enhancing investor confidence and encouraging greater Canadian investment in Pakistan.

Both sides acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Pakistani-Canadian community in fostering closer ties between the two countries and agreed that the diaspora continues to serve as a vital bridge connecting the two nations.

The two countries also agreed to exchange trade and minerals sector delegations to identify new areas of mutual cooperation and further enhance bilateral trade and investment.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif witnessed the signing of a Protocol on Phyto-sanitary Regulations governing the import of Canadian canola into Pakistan. The protocol was signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on behalf of their respective governments.

The agreements reached during the visit reflect the shared commitment of Pakistan and Canada to strengthen economic cooperation, facilitate investment, and build a broader strategic partnership for mutual benefit.
