Brussels, (Unib Rashid) — An important development has emerged regarding the Low Emission Zone in Brussels. It was previously announced that from April 1, 2026, fines of up to €350 would be imposed on vehicles that do not meet environmental standards (such as Euro 5 diesel). However, it has now been decided that no fines will be enforced from this date for the time being.
It is important to note that a ban on such vehicles has already been in place since January 1, 2026, and currently, violators are only being issued warning letters. According to the law, fines were supposed to begin after three months, but due to political disagreements and public pressure, this phase has been temporarily postponed.
The €350 fine was widely considered too high, especially for individuals who cannot afford to purchase new vehicles. This decision has provided temporary relief to small businesses, delivery drivers, and those working in central areas of the city.
On the other hand, environmental experts say that the LEZ policy has led to a noticeable reduction in pollution. Therefore, the law is unlikely to be completely abolished and may be reintroduced in the future through a more balanced approach.
