London, (Zahid Anwar Mirza) __ British politics has been plunged into a major crisis following the resignation of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s Chief of Staff, Morgan McSweeney, intensifying pressure on the Prime Minister himself to step down.
Several Members of Parliament from the Labour Party have called on Sir Keir Starmer to accept moral responsibility and resign from office. The demands come in the wake of McSweeney’s resignation on Sunday afternoon amid mounting criticism over his alleged role in pushing for the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson as the UK’s Ambassador to the United States.
It has emerged that senior civil servants had warned twice against Mandelson’s appointment due to his controversial past links with Jeffrey Epstein. Despite these warnings, the appointment was reportedly pursued, triggering widespread backlash.
The resignation has caused serious unrest within the Labour Party. Backbench MPs argue that if the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff has been forced to resign, the ultimate responsibility lies with the Prime Minister himself. Labour MP Brian Leishman stated that a change in political direction has become inevitable and that such change can only begin at the leadership level.
Senior Labour figure Jon Trickett also questioned Sir Keir Starmer’s judgment, saying that the appointments of both Mandelson and McSweeney had proven to be serious mistakes.
In his resignation statement, Morgan McSweeney accepted full responsibility for the decision regarding Lord Mandelson’s appointment, admitting that it had damaged public trust in the party, the government, and the political system as a whole.
Meanwhile, Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch launched a strong attack on the Prime Minister, accusing Sir Keir Starmer of deflecting responsibility and refusing to take ownership of his decisions.
Political analysts say the unfolding crisis has become a major test for the Labour government, with crucial decisions regarding the Prime Minister’s political future expected in the coming days.
