Brussels, (Unib Rashid) __ A very tense municipal council meeting took place in Anderlecht on Thursday evening, drawing a packed audience as officials debated two controversial proposals to impose curfews on local businesses.

After two weeks of heated discussions and growing concern among shopkeepers, the council ultimately voted against the initial recommendation of the executive council, reversing some earlier positions and bringing relief to many business owners.

The first proposal targeted the Clemenceau district, specifically the area bordered by the Van Lint – Fiennes – Jamar axis, Boulevard du Midi, and Chaussée de Mons. The neighborhood of Cureghem is known for its dense concentration of late-night establishments, including restaurants, cafés, grocery stores, convenience shops, and hairdressers.

Authorities had proposed closing all businesses between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. in an effort to reduce the area’s nighttime activity, which they argued attracts a vagrant population and drug users, leading to disturbances and public safety issues.

However, council members decided to reject the measure, citing concerns over its potential economic impact on small businesses and the local nightlife economy.
