London, (Shahzad Ali) — The National Health Service (NHS) is under significant strain as influenza cases throughout England escalate markedly, with hospital admissions increasing by 55% within a single week. According to recently released data, an average of 2, 660 patients per day are presently receiving treatment for influenza in hospitals — the highest figure recorded for this period of the year.
Last week, the daily average was 1, 717, whereas during the same period last year, the number was 1, 861. In 2023, only 402 influenza patients were admitted during this corresponding week, underscoring the extraordinary severity of this year’ s flu wave.
NHS National Medical Director, Professor Meghana Pandit, characterised the surge in influenza cases as “extremely high for this time of year.” She issued a caution that the increasing demand on Accident and Emergency (a & E) departments, strain on ambulance services, and a potential strike by resident doctors are collectively elevating the healthcare system towards a “worst- case scenario.”
“We are observing an exceptional wave of ‘super flu’ that is propelling the NHS into an exceedingly challenging situation,” Prof Pandit stated. “Our personnel are operating at full capacity to continue providing the highest standard of care to patients.”
She recommended that eligible members of the public receive their influenza vaccination promptly to ensure optimal protection ahead of the Christmas holiday. She emphasised that vaccination remains the most effective means of defence against severe illness and serves to shield vulnerable populations from infection.
Meanwhile, healthcare professionals have expressed concern regarding a recent statement made by an NHS official, suggesting that individuals exhibiting flu symptoms “must” wear face masks. Experts cautioned that such remarks could generate confusion concerning the preventive measures expected of the public in order to inhibit the spread of the virus.
Dr. Francesca Cavallaro, Senior Analytical Manager at the Health Foundation, warned that the latest data suggest the NHS is already experiencing the initial indicators of increased winter healthcare demands.
