Kashmir: Agricultural Lands of Activists Attached in Handwara Under UAPA

Brussels/Islamabad,(Unib Rashid) – Indian-Administered Jammu and Kashmir: Agricultural lands belonging to activists in Handwara have reportedly been attached under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), according to a statement by Altaf Hussain Wani, who criticised the move as part of a broader campaign of economic pressure against Kashmiris.

In a post on social media platform X, Wani alleged that the attachment of agricultural land, seizure of assets and demolition of homes were being used to suppress dissent and weaken the economic position of people in Indian-Administered Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

He described the measures as a form of economic pressure targeting Kashmiris, arguing that such actions threaten livelihoods and place additional burdens on affected families.

The attachment of agricultural land can have serious consequences for families who depend on farming for their income. The reported action has also renewed concerns about the use of stringent security legislation and its implications for property rights and civil liberties in the disputed region.

The UAPA is India’s anti-terrorism law, which empowers authorities to take action in cases involving alleged unlawful activities and terrorism. Its implementation in Kashmir has faced criticism from rights advocates over due process and the treatment of individuals accused under the legislation.

The specific circumstances surrounding the reported land attachment in Handwara, including the identities of the affected individuals and the legal grounds for the action, could not be independently verified from the statement alone.
