Erik Solheim Praises Shenzhen as One of the World’s Fastest-Growing Cities

BEIJING/SHENZHEN, (Unib Rashid) – Former Norwegian diplomat and environmentalist Erik Solheim has praised the remarkable transformation of Shenzhen, describing the Chinese city as the fastest-growing city in human history.

In a post on X, Solheim highlighted Shenzhen’s extraordinary development over the past five decades, noting that the city had been a small fishing village around 50 years ago but has since evolved into a major global centre of technology and innovation.

“The fastest growing city in human history,” Solheim wrote, adding that no other major city, including New York, Chicago or Tokyo, had developed at the same pace as Shenzhen.

Solheim also praised Shenzhen’s modern urban environment, describing it as highly technologically advanced while also being green and people-friendly.

His comments draw attention to Shenzhen’s transformation from a relatively small settlement into one of China’s most prominent economic and technological hubs.

The city is widely associated with China’s rapid economic development and has become home to major technology, manufacturing and innovation industries. Its growth has also been accompanied by extensive urban development and investment in modern infrastructure.

Solheim’s remarks have renewed international attention on Shenzhen’s development model, particularly its combination of technological innovation, economic growth, urban infrastructure and green public spaces.

The former Norwegian government minister and environmental advocate is known for his interest in environmental issues, sustainable development and international cooperation. His comments on Shenzhen reflect the growing global interest in the city’s transformation and its role in China’s technological and economic landscape.
