Islamabad/Brussels, (Unib Rashid) __ Engr. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar (S.I.) has assumed charge as the Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan.
Speaking to Dawn, Dr. Akhtar said that the higher education sector would soon witness “drastic and visible changes.” He stated that his priorities include strengthening quality assurance, promoting research through global partnerships, introducing industry-oriented academic programmes, enhancing faculty development, and equipping both teachers and students with modern skills. Despite financial constraints, he emphasized that higher education reforms remain his top priority.
Dr. Akhtar announced that a comprehensive reform strategy will be shared in the coming week. The plan includes the establishment of a Graduate Employment Cell, creation of a dedicated research fund, and major reforms in curriculum development, digitisation, and international collaboration.
With over 35 years of experience in higher education and 16 years of service as Vice Chancellor of six leading institutions, Dr. Akhtar reiterated his commitment to strengthening universities, improving governance at HEC, and contributing to Pakistan’s transition towards a knowledge-based economy.
