Cyberattack Hits European Commission, 350GB of Data Allegedly Stolen.

Brussels, (Unib Rashid) – The European Commission has reportedly fallen victim to a significant cyberattack, with hackers claiming to have stolen approximately 350 gigabytes of data.

According to details released by the Belgian news agency Belga News Agency, the attack took place earlier this week on Tuesday. Unknown hackers targeted the cloud infrastructure hosting the Commission’s central website, Europa.eu. Despite the breach, multiple European websites remained operational during the incident.

The Commission stated that it acted swiftly to contain the attack and safeguard its services and data. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the full extent of the breach. EU institutions have also been contacted as a precaution, amid concerns that other systems may have been affected.

While officials indicated that the overall impact appears limited, preliminary findings suggest that data may indeed have been exfiltrated.

Meanwhile, cybersecurity news platform BleepingComputer reported that it had been in contact with the alleged attacker. The hacker claims to have accessed multiple databases and extracted 350GB of sensitive information. As proof, several screenshots were reportedly shared with a journalist, allegedly showing internal details about European Commission staff and an email server in use.

The attacker has reportedly stated that there is no intention to demand ransom. Instead, the data may be published online at a later stage, raising concerns over potential security and privacy implications.

Authorities have yet to confirm the identity of those behind the attack.
