Cllr Raja Mohammad Aslam Khan, Leader of Luton Conservative Group, welcomes the government’s investment in cricket promotion

Luton, (Special Correspondent) __ Cricket enthusiasts in Luton and Lancashire have received a major boost as the UK government announced a £15 million investment to construct two new indoor cricket domes. These facilities will ensure that communities can enjoy their favourite sport throughout the year, breaking the seasonal barrier that has long limited participation.

The initiative, delivered in partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), will provide state-of-the-art facilities in areas lacking adequate sporting infrastructure. It also reflects a wider commitment to inclusivity, particularly as cricket continues to flourish among diverse communities. One-third of recreational players in England and Wales come from South Asian backgrounds, while women’s and girls’ participation saw more than a 20 per cent rise in 2024 alone.

Welcoming the announcement, Cllr Raja Mohammad Aslam Khan, Leader of the Luton Conservative Group, said he wholeheartedly supports the investment as both a councillor and a lifelong cricket lover. He emphasised the need for funds to be used through local consultations, so that the facilities are tailored to community needs.

“As well as serving as a councillor, I am proud to be the President of the Luton Midweek League and a Director of Lutonian Cricket Club. I have been actively involved in cricket in Luton for more than 40 years. Luton has long been regarded as a home of cricket, with passionate supporters and a thriving community. However, the shortage of cricket grounds means that many local teams are forced to travel outside the town to play. The limited grounds we do have are often not fit for purpose, with poor playing conditions leading to injuries and hospitalisations. Many of our pavilions are also in urgent need of renovation. It is vital that ground standards are improved so cricket can be played safely and enjoyed by all.”

Cllr Khan recalled that three years ago, the ECB approved the Dome project for Luton but there was a funding shortfall, and the delivery model did not meet local needs. “As a community, we called for a comprehensive investment package—one that would not only modernise our grounds and pavilions but also create local employment and ensure long-term sustainability by putting local cricket lovers at the heart of delivery,” he said.

He welcomed the fact that the ECB has now bridged this funding gap and is working in collaboration with the Council and the Luton cricket community. “This investment will mean safer facilities, new jobs for local people, and a stronger future for cricket in Luton for generations to come,” he added.

Cllr Khan concluded by stressing that this new dome and the wider investment must inspire future generations of cricketers while also ensuring better opportunities and resources for those already dedicated to the game.
