BRUSSELS/ISLAMABAD, (Unib Rashid) – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has issued a strong warning over the future of the Indus Waters Treaty, describing the agreement as a “red line” for Pakistan and cautioning that failure to restore it could have grave consequences.
Speaking on the issue, Bilawal said Pakistan’s nuclear capability “is not for ceremonial purposes” and asserted that if all diplomatic and political efforts to restore the Indus Waters Treaty were exhausted, Pakistan would have to consider all available strategic options. He emphasized that safeguarding Pakistan’s water rights remains a matter of national security.

His remarks come amid continuing tensions between Pakistan and India over the implementation of the 1960 treaty, which governs the sharing of waters from the Indus River system. The agreement has long been regarded as one of the few enduring frameworks of cooperation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours despite decades of political and military disputes.
