Asim Iftikhar Ahmad Calls for Reform of UN Veto Power, Demands Either Abolition or Strict Limits on Use.

Brussels / New York, (Unib Rashid) — Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has reiterated Pakistan’s principled position on the veto power held by permanent members of the UN Security Council.

In his statement, he said Pakistan’s policy is “clear and consistent,” stressing that the veto power should either be abolished altogether or, at minimum, its use by existing permanent members should be strictly restricted.

He further stated that Pakistan strongly opposes any expansion of the veto system or the addition of new individual permanent members, arguing that further expansion would only deepen existing problems within the Security Council.

“This is our principled position,” he emphasized, warning that increasing the number of veto holders would further complicate global decision-making rather than improve it.
