An Independent Kashmir – The Only Just and Viable Solution, says Yousaf Ch

London, (Shahzad Ali) __ Yousaf Ch, Senior Vice President of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), UK Zone, has asserted that the Kashmir issue can only be resolved by embracing the vision of the late Amanullah Khan, founding leader of the Kashmir freedom movement. Khan consistently advocated that the only just, practical, and lasting solution is creating an independent and sovereign Jammu and Kashmir—a position he elaborated in a detailed policy document.

Yousaf Ch emphasised that Jammu and Kashmir remains a divided territory between three nuclear powers—India, Pakistan, and China. He warned that ongoing tensions and border skirmishes, particularly between India and Pakistan, prove that military conflict is not a viable option and that a full-scale war would be catastrophic for the entire region and beyond.

Rejecting suggestions to formalise the existing territorial status quo by converting the Line of Control, the Working Boundary, and the Line of Actual Control into permanent borders—particularly after India’s unilateral revocation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019—Yousaf Ch stated that such measures are a direct denial of the Kashmiri people’s aspirations. “Kashmiris have never accepted forced division or foreign occupation,” he said. “Imposed borders are neither legitimate nor sustainable.”

He outlined that the only acceptable resolution must include the complete withdrawal of Indian, Pakistani, and Chinese forces; the establishment of a neutral, independent, and sovereign Jammu and Kashmir; and a UN-supervised referendum allowing Kashmiris to determine their future. He added that this should be pursued per the United Nations Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions, particularly the one adopted on August 13, 1948.

Yousaf Ch further stated that the heart of the conflict lies in the will of the Kashmiri people, who have long demanded freedom, dignity, and self-determination. “No solution imposed from outside can succeed,” he asserted. “In a truly democratic setting, Kashmiris would never accept subjugation under any occupying power. The only outcome that reflects their collective identity and will is an independent state.”

He proposed that an independent Kashmir could act as a buffer state between India, Pakistan, and China, serving as a bridge for peace and regional cooperation. With international guarantees of sovereignty and neutrality, it could become a model for human rights, development, and stability, transforming from a flashpoint of conflict into a zone of peace.

Concluding his statement, Yousaf Ch said, “The Kashmir dispute cannot be resolved through occupation or forced settlements. The only viable, lasting solution is forming an independent, democratic, and sovereign Jammu and Kashmir—exactly as envisioned by Amanullah Khan.”
