Vienna, (Muhammad Amir Siddique) – Another Milestone Achieved! Pakistan and IAEA Signed Safeguards Agreement for Unit 5 of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant. IAEAGC, signed important practical arrangements with Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Raja Ali Raza Anwar for the application of safeguards at Unit 5 of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant, in the presence of China Atomic Energy Authority Chairman Shan Zhongde.

Pakistan signed the Safeguards Agreement for Chashma Unit-5 (C-5) with IAEA organization today. Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman PAEC, and DG Rafael Mariano Grossi signed Agreement at IAEA HQ Vienna, on the margins of 70th IAEA General Conference.

The signing was witnessed by Mr. Shan Zhongde, Chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority, & Permanent Representatives of Pakistan and China — reflecting the strong Pakistan-China partnership in peaceful nuclear cooperation. The C-5 Safeguards Agreement was unanimously approved by the IAEA Board of Governors in March 2026 — a clear vote of international confidence in Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

C-5 will have a gross capacity of 1,200 MW(e). Once operational, it will add substantial low-carbon electricity to Pakistan’s national grid — boosting energy security, supporting climate goals, and driving sustainable economic growth. Pakistan currently runs 6 nuclear power plants, 3,620 MW(e) combined capacity, with an average capacity factor of 90%+. Over 100 reactor-years of experience — a strong record of safe & secure nuclear operations.
