“From the Archives”: Embassy of Pakistan Brussels Pays Tribute to Ambassador Syed Tariq Fatemi’s Distinguished Diplomatic Legacy

Brussels, (Unib Rashid) – The Embassy of Pakistan in Brussels has published another feature in its popular “From the Archives” series, highlighting the remarkable diplomatic career of Ambassador Syed Tariq Fatemi, who served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg from September 2002 to July 2004.

According to the Embassy, Ambassador Fatemi is widely recognized as an accomplished career diplomat, strategic affairs expert and seasoned statesman. He led Pakistan’s diplomatic mission in Brussels during a period that demanded both strategic foresight and diplomatic finesse. His tenure is regarded as a significant chapter in Pakistan’s diplomatic history, marked by clarity of vision, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s engagement with Europe.

Before his assignment in Brussels, Ambassador Fatemi had already built an outstanding diplomatic career, serving Pakistan in several key capitals, including Washington D.C., Beijing, Moscow and New York. He also served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to Jordan and later as Additional Foreign Secretary, overseeing important strategic affairs. His years in Washington, first as Deputy Chief of Mission and later as Ambassador, earned him recognition for his ability to navigate complex international political environments with exceptional skill and discretion.

One of the defining achievements of his tenure in Brussels was the successful conclusion of the Third Generation Cooperation Agreement between Pakistan and the European Union. The Embassy described the agreement as a landmark milestone that continues to shape Pakistan-EU relations. More than a diplomatic accomplishment, the agreement established a durable framework for enhanced political dialogue, expanded economic cooperation and strengthened development partnership, laying the foundation for a broader and more sustainable relationship between Pakistan and the European Union.

During his posting, Ambassador Fatemi further deepened Pakistan’s engagement with the European institutions as well as the governments of Belgium and Luxembourg. His leadership helped expand bilateral cooperation, strengthen diplomatic ties and reinforce Pakistan’s image as a responsible, constructive and reliable international partner.

With a diplomatic career spanning more than four decades, Ambassador Fatemi is currently serving his second tenure as the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, where he continues to play an important role in shaping and implementing Pakistan’s foreign policy. Drawing upon his vast diplomatic experience, he provides strategic advice on regional and global affairs and remains actively engaged in Pakistan’s international outreach.

Beyond government service, Ambassador Fatemi is also an accomplished author, an eloquent speaker at international forums and a respected commentator whose insights on diplomacy, geopolitics and international relations are widely acknowledged.

The Embassy noted that Ambassador Fatemi’s tenure in Brussels continues to be remembered as an era of visionary diplomacy, leaving a lasting imprint on Pakistan’s partnership with the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg, while giving Pakistan’s voice in Europe greater depth, clarity and influence.
