Brussels, (Unib Rashid) – The European Commission on Monday launched a new initiative, in cooperation with Belgium and several international partners, to support the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. As part of the initiative, €883.6 million has been allocated to restore critical infrastructure damaged during Israeli military operations.
The funding will support projects aimed at rehabilitating water supply and wastewater systems, clearing debris, and restoring essential services, including healthcare, energy, agriculture, and food security.
European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, stressed the urgency of ensuring that humanitarian assistance reaches the people of Gaza.
“It is now essential that conditions on the ground allow our assistance to reach the people of Gaza,” she said.
The initiative, named “Team Gaza,” has been introduced as a joint platform to coordinate all reconstruction efforts in Gaza and facilitate engagement with Israel. It is also intended to complement the Peace Council initiative led by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The participating countries and institutions include Belgium, Spain, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Japan, Switzerland, and Sweden, along with the European Commission, the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the World Bank.
According to reports, Canada and Australia have also expressed interest in joining the initiative.
The announcement was made ahead of the second meeting of the Palestinian Donor Group, attended by representatives from 65 delegations. The meeting is jointly chaired by the European Commission and the Palestinian Authority, with reforms within the Palestinian Authority also featuring prominently on the agenda.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to the Palestinian people and the two-state solution.
“The European Union is the largest donor to the Palestinian people and the strongest supporter of the two-state solution. To achieve this goal, the Palestinian Authority must implement the agreed reforms and strengthen its governance capacity,” she said.
