Brusselsm (Unib Rashid) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, praising all those who contributed to the diplomatic efforts that made the deal possible.
In a statement issued following the agreement, von der Leyen said, “I welcome the agreement reached between the United States and Iran after sustained diplomatic efforts by numerous partners.”
She emphasized that the immediate priority is the swift and full implementation of the agreement by all parties involved. According to von der Leyen, the deal should allow for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the full restoration of freedom of navigation. She noted that this is vital for regional stability and the global economy and could pave the way for broader discussions on peace and security across the Middle East.
The European Commission President further stated that Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, as well as its destabilizing activities in the region, must be addressed. She stressed that lasting peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved while Lebanon remains engulfed in conflict. Europe, she said, once again calls on all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to implement a genuine ceasefire.
Von der Leyen also noted that G7 leaders will meet with partners from the Gulf region and the wider Middle East in Évian, reaffirming Europe’s readiness to play its part in supporting regional peace and stability.
At the same time, she highlighted an important lesson from the crisis. “This crisis also carries a clear message. Once again, energy dependence has been weaponized. We must diversify our supply routes and develop alternative export corridors to reduce vulnerabilities arising from disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz,” she said.
