Karachi, (Special Correspondent) __ For the first time in the history of Bhains Colony, a transformative project is being launched that will not only reshape the local economy but also protect public health, the environment, and future generations. Supported jointly by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Green Climate Fund (GCF), and the Government of Sindh, the establishment of a biogas plant marks a major step toward clean energy, environmental sustainability, and improved community well-being.
To make this project a reality, a 15-day historic livestock census has begun today in Bhains Colony, funded by ADB. All community members are urged to provide accurate data and become part of this national initiative.
Why Is This Project Essential for Our Health and Environment?
This biogas plant is a comprehensive solution that converts waste into valuable resources, providing a healthier environment for the entire community.
1️⃣ Prevention of Deadly Respiratory Diseases
Improper and unscientific disposal of dung has long been a major issue in Bhains Colony. When dung is thrown onto roads or left to dry near drainage channels, vehicular movement turns it into fine dust, which contaminates the air. As a result, a majority of residents suffer from asthma, bronchitis, and other severe respiratory illnesses.
The biogas plant will eliminate dung from the roads, reduce air pollution, and significantly improve public health.
2️⃣ Reduction of Skin Diseases and Infections
Continuous exposure to unhygienic conditions has caused widespread skin diseases and infections among residents and farmers. Scientific waste management will greatly improve sanitation across the colony, reducing these health issues.
3️⃣ Protection of Marine Life and Conservation of Water
Nearly 8,000 tons of dung were previously mixed with water daily and discharged into the sea through drainage channels. This not only wasted water and electricity but also introduced toxic materials and heavy metals into the marine ecosystem—damaging fish populations and mangrove forests.
With the biogas plant, no dung will enter the sea, ensuring protection of the coastline and marine life.
💰 Economic and Urban Benefits
4️⃣ Historic Economic Improvement for Farmers
For the first time ever, farmers will receive direct payment for what was previously considered “waste.” Selling dung will provide them with additional and sustainable income, improving their quality of life and enabling greater investment in the dairy sector.
5️⃣ Affordable Transportation for Karachi’s Citizens
Clean bio-methane produced from dung will power buses of the Red Line BRT system. This will serve as an affordable, sustainable, and eco-friendly mode of transport for the public.
6️⃣ Low-Cost, High-Quality Organic Fertilizer
The residue produced after biogas generation will be turned into high-quality, chemical-free organic fertilizer, available to farmers at low cost. This will enhance soil fertility and boost the production of healthy food across Pakistan.
🏆 Leadership, Vision, and Tireless Commitment
Behind this initiative is the unwavering dedication of the Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association (DCFA) Pakistan and its president, Shakir Umar Gujjar, who has spent nearly six years (2018–present) advocating for the rights and needs of Bhains Colony. His strong leadership and persistent efforts have been recognized by ADB, which has awarded him certificates of appreciation.
DCFA committee members also played a crucial role by going door to door, educating farmers, and assisting technical teams—making this project a true collective achievement.
The association secured not only the approval of the biogas plant but also commitments from ADB for education facilities (including universities), improved infrastructure, quality healthcare, employment opportunities, and solarization of farms to reduce operational costs.
📢 Important Appeal
DCFA urges all farmers, landowners, and community members in Bhains Colony to actively participate in the 15-day livestock census. Providing accurate and complete data will help estimate the daily quantity of dung and ensure successful implementation of this historic biogas plant.
Your accurate information is a guarantee of a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous future.
