Brussels Forms “Valentine Government” After Record 614-Day Wait.

Brussels, (Unib Rashid) __ After a record-breaking 614 days since the June 2024 elections, the Parliament of the Brussels-Capital Region has successfully formed a new government on February 14, marking a historic political milestone for the Belgian capital.

The new seven-party coalition, informally dubbed the “Valentine Government,” brings together French-speaking parties — Mouvement Réformateur (MR), Socialist Party (PS), and Les Engagés — alongside Dutch-speaking parties — Groen, Anders, Vooruit, and Christian Democratic and Flemish (CD&V).

New Leadership Team
The newly appointed leadership includes:
Ahmed Laaouej (PS) – Minister of Local Authorities, Equal Opportunities, and Health
Karine Lalieux (PS) – Secretary of State for Housing
Laurent Hublet (Les Engagés) – Minister of Employment, Economy, and Digitalization
Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) – Minister of Mobility and Public Works
Dirk De Smedt (Anders) – Minister of Budget and Finance
Ans Persoons (Vooruit) – Secretary of State for Environment and Climate
Boris Dilliès (MR) – Minister-President of Brussels.

Key Policy Priorities
With strong backing from the Socialist Party (PS), the government has outlined several major initiatives:
Healthcare: Doubling financial support for five public hospitals.
Housing: Increasing the “Be Home” owner-occupier bonus to €320 and continuing investment in public housing projects.

Education: Allocating €5 million annually to reduce school dropout rates.
Economic Growth: Advancing development plans at the Heysel Plateau to stimulate employment and economic activity.

Political observers describe the formation of this broad coalition as a significant step toward stability in Brussels after nearly two years of negotiations.
