LONDON, (Zahid anwar Mirza) — British Sikh activist Jagtar Singh Johal has been released on bail from a Delhi jail after spending nearly nine years in detention.
The Delhi High Court had ordered his release on bail on September 18. The court also warned the Indian government that continued detention of Johal despite the court’s clear order could lead to contempt of court proceedings.
Johal’s lawyers had filed a writ of habeas corpus before the court, arguing that he was being kept in custody in violation of the court’s explicit directions.
Jagtar Singh Johal was arrested nearly nine years ago and remained in detention for the duration of the legal proceedings, during which his full trial could not be completed.
Following the latest court proceedings, Johal has now been released on bail after spending years in custody.
