LONDON, (Zahid Anwar Mirza) — Pakistani-origin global economist Saadia Zahidi, who was born in Lahore, has been appointed as the next Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), becoming the first woman to lead the global aviation body in its history.

According to an official IATA announcement, Zahidi will assume office on November 1, 2026. The current Director General, Willie Walsh, will step down on July 31, 2026, concluding his tenure after leading the organization through a transformative period for the aviation industry.

Saadia Zahidi currently serves as Managing Director at the World Economic Forum (WEF) and is widely recognized for her expertise in global economics, public policy, and international development. Her appointment is being hailed as a significant milestone for the global aviation sector.

Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Zahidi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Smith College, an MPhil from the Graduate Institute, and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard University. She is also the author of the acclaimed book Fifty Million Rising.

In its statement, the IATA Board of Governors expressed confidence that Zahidi’s leadership would strengthen the organization and help address the evolving challenges facing the global airline industry.

Responding to her appointment, Zahidi said she looks forward to working closely with member airlines, governments, and industry stakeholders to promote a safe, efficient, innovative, and environmentally sustainable global aviation system.

She takes over IATA’s leadership at a time when the aviation industry is confronting major challenges, including rising fuel prices, geopolitical tensions, supply chain pressures, and the need to meet ambitious climate and sustainability targets.

Her appointment marks a historic moment not only for IATA but also for women in global aviation leadership, reflecting the industry’s growing commitment to diversity and inclusive governance.
