Brussels, (Unib Rashid) — After the former Secretary General of NATO, former European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has also described the attack by the United States and Israel on Iran as a violation of international law.
Speaking to a European media outlet, Borrell strongly criticized the European Union and its President Ursula von der Leyen. He said that the European Union has failed to hold the United States accountable for violations of international law.
Borrell stated that the accusation of an “immediate threat” used to justify the U.S. war against Iran is illegal under international law. He also accused the President of the European Commission of overstepping her authority and repeatedly interfering in European foreign affairs, alleging that she has shown systematic bias in favor of the United States and Israel.
He further said that despite the fact that Europe is facing severe consequences in terms of rising energy prices, U.S. President Donald Trump appears pleased with increasing oil prices because the United States is an oil-exporting country.
Borrell, who served as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs from 2019 to 2024, also advised his successor Kaja Kallas to be absolutely clear in condemning violations of international law, regardless of whether they are committed by Russia, Israel, or the United States.
He warned that credibility is lost when international principles are applied selectively.
The Spanish socialist politician, who has been a strong critic of Israel, also praised the stance of Pedro Sánchez on the issue.
It is worth mentioning that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, had recently stated that “Europe can no longer act as the guardian of the old world order — a world that has already passed and will never return.”
