The government is increasing the electricity subsidy for households from September 1. It also wants to introduce measures to prevent reservoir filling from being too low in the future.
A day before the Norwegian parliament’s (Storting) presidency is scheduled to meet to consider canceling the summer holidays, the government announced that it is putting forward several new measures, NRK and TV2 report.
The electricity subsidy scheme for households will be increased to 90% from September 1 – one month earlier than previously planned.
“This provides insurance when the price goes over 70 øre; then, there will be 90% support. Norwegians depend on electricity,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said.
The government is also coming up with a measure to ensure that reservoir filling does not become too low.
“We want to make sure that the filling rate is not too low. If it does, we must hold back on exports so that we always have good filling in Norway,” Støre added.
He emphasized that this applies in Southern Norway. Further north in the country, the situation is different, and exports will proceed as usual.
